The Two Minute Peace Work Out

About

An anti-war protest is a struggle by its participants against the authorities perpetrating the war. The very fact that they are struggling against the authorities means that, on some level, they are fighting against them. How can we ever live in a world without war if the only way we think we can stop it is by fighting against it?

The two-minute peace work out takes on a different perspective, as it is an event that is pro-peace, rather than anti-war. It is a two-minute silence during which the participant finds their peace within and thinks of peace. We all know how powerful these silences can be when used to remember victims of wars or natural disasters, so why not use one for something positive? After all, if everyone in the world were to participate simultaneously then for those two minutes world peace would be a reality!

You can participate by yourself or, if you want to experience the power of sharing peace with others, in groups. Wherever you are, even if it takes place at 4am your time, you can be safe in the knowledge that your thoughts will be connecting you to many people across the globe.

The first two "work outs" took place on 16th December 2007 at 1200 GMT and 24th August 2008 at 1530 GMT respectively.

The focal point for the first one was a peaceful flash mob (or "Peace-Mob"), which gathered at Jubilee Gardens on the South Bank in London to take part in the "work out" together. For the second one the focal point was Shambala Festival in Northamptonshire (http://www.shambalafestival.org).

However, the real success of this project has come from the fact that hundreds have participated worldwide. It is a truly global event. So far, people have participated in mainland Europe, Australasia, Asia, North America and South America!

To coincide with Peace Day on 21st September 2008 (see http://www.peaceoneday.org) a Two-Minute Peace Work Out will take place at 3.30pm (UK Time).

In London, a "Peace-Mob" will once again be gathering at Jubilee Gardens on the South Bank to take part in the two minutes of silence before peacefully dispersing. Join us! (Click here for "Peace-Mob" Instructions)
